Removals - Tips and Advice
Man and Van Salisbury / Removals
Choosing a Man and Van - Removals Service
We get lots of calls from panicking movers who have booked a man and van "who have not turned up" and are left stranded desperately trying to find an alternative at the last moment., it always seems to be from people who have booked a local man and van service offering removals at ridiculously low prices. - ask your-self some questions.
Am i sure this is a professional company who will turn up on the day ? - be sure to consider very cheap removal quotes, they could be more costly then you think! What level of service am i going to get? - Are my goods going to be in safe hands? - Will this man and van turn up if they get a better offer on the day of my move? .
Will your goods be insured while in transit? if not / you will not be compensated for any damage caused either by a road accident, theft from vehicle, or accidental damage within the cargo area whilst your goods are being transported.
Is the removal vehicle correctly insured? If not / an incorrect insurance on a haulage / removal vehicle or other can be taken off the road by police and your goods left at the side of the road or taken with the vehicle to a police compound until the fines are paid and the correct insurance produced. only then will the owner of the van get his vehicle and your goods back or he may just sign a disclaimer for his van and your goods, rather then pay around £2,500 for the required insurances to run this business, plus any fines and daily storage fee's.
Scams - Some small removal companies use intimidation tactics to get you to part with more money than you were quoted. We ask that all our customers fill out our contact / details form before we confirm prices in writing via email, this way every thing is confirmed in writing by us and the customer and each has a copy of the agreed prices and the details that the customer had provided for their move.
The Scam - be careful before accepting cheap verbal prices over the phone. Assuming the man and van scam artists turn up on the day of your move in their dirty old van and have not left you stranded, they have loaded the van with your furniture, they arrive at your destination, at this point they will ask you for more money before unloading your furniture, saying "there is more furniture than you said" or "my price didn't include fuel - this could be up-to 3 times more than you were quoted, after all you have no proof of what was agreed. we are not saying this is always the case, but it happens, don't let it happen to you.
If you require a professional and fully insured man and and van service then you will find that our rates are very competitive.

Preparing for your Move - Tips & Advice
Packing properly will save you money, time and a great deal of frustration. Pack heavier items (such as books) into smaller boxes, and lighter items into larger ones, wrap delicate or fragile items with bubble wrap, foam wrap or paper (this depends on the item, never make any given box heavier than you or the driver can handle without a struggle.
Books - can be very heavy, so use smaller boxes as this makes them easier to carry when possible. You can use larger ones but only go half way, and fill the rest with lighter items so the box is manageable
China and Glass - Use several sheets of newspaper to layer the bottom of the box. Wrap up the glass and china with white paper and place them in a box. and place more newspaper on top. Repeat the process until the box is full. Individually wrap glasses and place them standing up. Plates should also be individually wrapped but placed on their SIDE. If the box is set down too strongly all of the weight will transfer to the bottom few plates, which could easily break. You might want to use soft items like cushions to provide extra padding. Clearly make cartons with delicate items. Be wary of using newspapers on some items as they can leave inky marks on things.
Furniture with drawers - you can leave these filled with linen and clothes, but make sure fragile, valuable or plain heavy items are emptied. Drawers in divan beds should be emptied too.
Flat Pack Furniture
Try
to dismantle self assembly furniture in advance this will save space in
the van and will also be safer, flat pack furniture does not travel
well and is prone to loosening when being moved.
Beds
If your bed can be dismantled ensure this is done prior to your move, this will save time and space.
Washing Machines - Disconnect these and empty the contents. A drum locking bar should be fitted to automatic machines.
Fridges and Freezers - remember to defrost and drain at least 48hours before the move, appliances must be dry
Cookers - Clean these as grease can be dangerous. Gas cookers usually have a bayonet fitting but a plumber may be required. Pack the glass plate out of the microwave and any loose fittings off the cooker.
Garden Tools - these should be cleaned. Use packing tape bound tightly around them to make neat bundles.
Access
Ensure that all your items will fit through doors, staircases, lifts and hallways, also making sure these areas are clear of obstructions.
Parking
Always
ensure that there is parking available outside of your premises on the
day, this may mean talking to your neighbours in advance of the move and
checking that they will move if necessary. If you have meters or permit
parking, make sure you have plenty of change or the required permit
available to hand.
Finally - Walk around your house once everything has been loaded. Double check all drawers, cabinets, basements, garages and storage locker, Take your time and make sure you're absolutely sure that you have loaded all your belongings, record all utility meter readings (gas, electric, water). lock all windows and doors.
